Packaging APL Runtime Systems

Postby PhilGray on Thu Oct 07, 2010 10:18 am

Just wondering whether anyone would like to share their experience on this subject.
I use the following package - AWinstall - , which is fairly easy to use ( bought it when it was much cheaper years ago, is now 99$ )

IIRC, someone mentioned a few years ago that they use a free packaging software ( script or similar ) that also worked very well.

We have been using this free program http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php and are very satisfy with it.

I've been using InstallShield in several places. Sometime it was giving me headache creating installation package, which would not run on specific Windows configurations. It would be listed as "known issue" and will not be fixed by vendor for some time. Larger the company - slower it moves.
I cannot recommend it due to high price even so it may do almost anything you want with installation.

Hi Alex,
I've used AWInstall for Win98/Win2K/WinXP without a hitch ; Win7 I haven't tried yet.
Thanks for the warning though.

I'll second Inno Setup. We have been using it for years. It even handled the GAC install thingy for the Dyalog .NET bridge thing.

I have been very disappointed with InstallShield, probably because of the same issues as Alex mentions. Switched over to Inno Setup as Paul, and have never looked back :-)
