Denmark has banned Marmite

Postby tclviiidyalog on Wed May 25, 2011 4:34 pm

Denmark has banned Marmite on the grounds that the spread's Vitamin B fortification puts it into conflict with Danish food safety regs.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has allegedly made the importation of Marmite illegal, apparently on the grounds that the yeast extract is fortified with vitamin B, and therefore doesn't meet strict safety guidelines. (It's not the first time Marmite has been banned for health reasons - a few years ago some Welsh schools removed it from breakfast menus because of its salt content.) The possibility of a Marmite war with Denmark seems remote - the half of the UK population who find Marmite disgusting are unlikely to be outraged - but if the ban (which also includes Ovaltine and Horlicks) continues, what Danish produce can Britain boycott in retaliation? ... di-toksvig

Any "foodstuff" that is fortified with vitamins has required a special import permit since 2004, but the authorities have not been strict in the enforcement. Apparently, the importers of Marmite have not bothered (or have not been aware that they needed) to apply for such a permit (the process takes 3-6 months). Now they have been asked to stop sales until they have the paperwork sorted out. But bring your own Marmite if visting Denmark over the next few weeks :-)

I feel lucky as marmite is not a prerequisite for installing dyalog 13.0 italian version.
