Explain this bug...
Such a nice and innocent statement, how is it possible to get a FILE NAME ERROR here???

I think it is the trailing blanks in the file names that causes the FILE NAME ERROR. This looks like a v12.1 bug, it works in v11.0(!).

Yup, this is a bug in the 12.1 Unicode version. Now logged:
5518: Unicode versions do not ignore trailing blanks in native file names.
It will be fixed shortly, thanks.

This bug is now fixed and the patch is available to DSS subscribers.

Yeah, thanks - I've just seen it in the latest mail. So, should I eliminate my 'delete-trailing-blanks'-dfn from the statement or - for full correctness - leave it in? Ah, questions over questions... ;)

So long as everyone who will be using your application has installed the fix, then I would advise removing your delete-trailing-blanks code.
